Between social media feeds, videogaming, AI chats, online gambling, and all the app notifications, it's easy to feel like digital devices are out of our control at home. Parents come in worried about their child who’s struggling in school, unmotivated or lost interest in after-school activities. At home, their child has problems sleeping, eating, being active. When screens get in the way of your child’s health, you know you need to help them but you don’t know how, especially in a fast paced online world. Raising children in this digital age is a unique struggle that only parents today can really understand. It quicky overwhelms us and burns us out. In our work together, we slow down and look at what's driving your concerns with your child’s behavior, not just the behavior itself. I meet you where you are and together we make a family media plan that builds healthier habits and sets realistic goals around screen use at home. About Selma Hi, I'm Selma (she/her). I’m a San Francisco (born and raised) Digital Native who has experienced technology’s impact on childhood firsthand. I grew up on dial-up, Myspace, and burning CDs of pirated music. Cellphones made calls, no one texted. Later, I got my college on Facebook because it hadn’t been added yet. When everyone got a smartphone, I got a Blackberry. It wasn’t until decades later that I realized I, like many, had become addicted and dependent on my smartphone. Professionally, I spent my career at the intersection of youth mental health and the everchanging digital world they are growing up in. I began my clinical work supporting at-risk youth, neurodivergent children, and tech start-up clients in SF greater Bay Area. Today, I work with teens and their families to help them navigate issues that are more common than people realize — phone addiction, toxic relationships, health concerns, substance use, risky behavior, online bullying, and more. A particular focus of mine is supporting and guiding parents on their personalized journey to a healthy relationship with screen use at home. I draw on an adaptable approach blending family systems, strength-based, and trauma-informed frameworks with motivational interviewing and cognitive behavioral techniques — to meet each client where they are at. Outside of my therapy practice, I am an active advocate for youth mental health in a digital age. I facilitate parent workshops, I speak at school board meetings and press conferences the CA State Capitol about the harmful effects of technology on children and learning. I am committed to affirming, culturally responsive care for LGBTQ+, BIPOC and addicts in recovery. • Our Process | EMERGE CENTER

Learn about EMERGE’s therapy process, from the initial phone call to ongoing sessions and ending therapy. We provide a thorough assessment, tailored treatment options, and regular check-ins to ensure your concerns are met. Therapy is collaborative and flexible, designed to support your goals. Our Process First Contact Whether our first contact is by email, phone or text, we will arrange some time to talk with you to better understand your needs. We will discuss treatment options and whether we have a therapist that is a good fit for you. If not, we are happy to recommend other providers. Assessment Session(s) The first 1-3 sessions are the assessment phase of therapy. We gather as much information as possible about your concerns, their history and what you have tried to address them. During this process, we will discuss our impressions of your situation and recommend a course of treatment and/or action. While it is hard to predict how treatment progress because there are so many variables, we will give you some idea of what to expect going forward. Ongoing Process and Feedback Assuming that your treatment involves ongoing sessions, the therapist will check in with you frequently to ensure that your concerns are being met. Discussing the process of therapy with you directly is not only good customer service, it is an essential ingredient of good therapy. Ending Therapy While it is your decision alone to end therapy, it is useful to discuss this openly as part of the therapeutic process for several reasons: If there are any concerns about your therapy, we may be able to address them The process of ending is a way to review progress on your goals and plan for the future Being thoughtful about ending can help us think about other options for your continued growth While therapy can go on indefinitely as a personal growth process, this should be a well thought out choice after specific areas of concern have been addressed.

  • Insurance | EMERGE CENTER

At EMERGE, we don’t accept insurance directly to prioritize quality care, flexibility, and transparency. We do offer various affordable therapy options, including: reduced fees and EAP programs. We can also provide out-of-network reimbursement statements. 職位空缺 At the present time, we do not accept any insurance directly. If you would like a statement to send to your insurance for out-of-network reimbursement, please let your therapist know. You are responsible for checking your insurance to see if it covers your therapist and therapy. Please be aware that associate therapists are often not covered by insurance. Why We Don’t Accept Health Insurance While we understand it can be difficult to find a mental health provider through insurance, we are sadly unable to accept it. There are many reason for this and we have attempted to explain them below: 1. Administrative Burdens Accepting insurance involves a significant amount of time on administrative work rather than on patient care. Navigating pre-authorization requirements, handling claims, and dealing with reimbursement delays require extensive documentation and frequent communication with insurance companies. Opting out of insurance networks reduces these administrative demands, allowing us to allocate more time and focus to client care. 2. Control Over Treatment In-network insurance companies often dictate certain aspects of care, including types of treatment covered, frequency of sessions, and duration of coverage. This can limit our ability to fully customize treatment plans to each clients needs. Opting out of insurance networks allows us more flexibilty in choosing the treatment approach that best suits each patient’s goals and timelines, leading to a more personalized and effective care experience. 3. Sustainable Economics Insurance reimbursement rates for mental health providers tend to be significantly lower compared to other medical specialties. Many therapists find that the rates offered by insurance companies do not align with the overhead and resources necessary to maintain a high-quality practice. Operating outside of insurance networks can create a more sustainable business model, allowing us to provide a high standard of care without the financial strain. 4. Improved Quality of Care Seeing fewer patients and spending more time with each one often leads to higher quality interactions. By not accepting insurance, we can schedule fewer clients and improve our focus on our clients. We can also schedule longer or more frequent sessions without being restricted by insurance billing codes or pressured to meet high quotas. 5. Transparency in Pricing Insurance billing can sometimes be complex and opaque, leading to unexpected costs or “surprise bills” for patients. Opting out of insurance networks allows us to offer straightforward, transparent pricing where patients know exactly what they’re paying for. This upfront pricing can foster a stronger, trust-based relationship, as both parties are clear on financial terms from the beginning. 6. Privacy Concerns Privacy concerns are particularly relevant in mental health care. When using insurance, mental health treatment often requires a formal diagnosis that goes on the patient’s medical record. Insurance companies may review records and demand changes to treatment based on limited information. Opting out of insurance allows us to maintain a higher level of privacy for patients who may be uncomfortable sharing details of their treatment with insurers. Conclusion: A Patient-Centered Approach, Not a Public Health Solution While there are many reasons we don’t accept insurance, we realize it can create barriers to care for many patients. The initial out-of-pocket costs may be prohibitive, limiting access for individuals who cannot afford private pay services. This can exacerbate disparities in mental health care, as those without financial resources or adequate insurance coverage may struggle to receive necessary treatment. Additionally, navigating reimbursement through out-of-network benefits can be complex and burdensome for patients. While our hope is for a broad based, public health solution to this issue, it is unfortunately too complex and difficult for us to take on as a small mental health practice. However, we have attempted to make therapy more affordable through the following: • Hiring therapists at varying experience levels that charge different rates. • Offered reduced fee services whenever possible. • Accepting payments through the EAP program for DJUSD and YCOE. • Providing a variety of therapy and support groups. • Providing pro-bono group therapy to adolescent Medi-Cal recipients. • Offer free workshops and groups at various times throughout the year. • Providing reduced fees for group therapy. If you are interested in learning more about this issue, here is a story on NPR of why some therapists have left insurance as they face many of the same issues as we do. 出現 / əˈmərj / 動詞 變得明顯,重要或突出

  • Sports Psychology | EMERGE CENTER

The EMERGE Performance and Sport Psychology program is focused on helping students understand and utilize decades of clinical research and knowledge around what it takes to perform at a peak level in any area of performance, including academics, sports, dance, drama and life.   PERFORMANCE and SPORT PSYCHOLOGY The “mental game” is increasingly recognized as central to elite performance in both sports and life. While performance and sport psychology is highly utilized in college athletics and professional life, it gets little attention in high school where the need is just as great. The EMERGE Performance and Sport Psychology program is focused on helping students understand and utilize decades of clinical research and knowledge around what it takes to perform at a peak level in any area of performance, including academics, sports, dance, drama and life. We are currently developing curriculum for SportPsych 101 and 201, six-week psychoeducational classes for high school athletes. We also hope to develop a Performance Psychology class based on the same core material. Currently, we offer individual performance coaching and therapy to help students work on specific issues of concern.
